Natural Perfume Basics: About Absolutes
Many “absolutes” that are available today are concoctions of synthetic chemicals and fragrances. There is no law that prevents companies from marketing their fragrances in this way. It is much more profitable to sell synthetics than to go through the expense and effort to make a real botanical product.
True modern absolutes are highly concentrated aromatic “oils” extracted from plants through a multi-step solvent method.
The process begins with extracting aromatic oils from the plant material with a chemical solvent such as hexane or benzene.
The solvent is then removed through distillation or chemical extraction. The substance left behind is a waxy substance called a concrete.
The aromatic oils are then extracted from the concrete with ethyl alcohol. After the ethyl alcohol is removed, the remaining substance is called an absolute.
Absolutes carry an aroma close to the plant from which they came. Absolutes are the most concentrated form of fragrance. Skillfully made absolutes are highly regarded in natural perfumery.
Note: Absolutes can and usually do contain traces of solvent; they are not suitable for internal use.
About Our Absolutes
Traditionally, absolutes were made using a method called “enfleurage”. This is a time consuming method where plant material–such as rose petals– is layered on top of lard (animal fat).
The fat absorbs the aromatic oils over time. Eventually the plant material is removed and replaced with fresh material. This is repeated over a period of weeks or months.
The resulting fatty aromatic substance (called pomade) can then be used as it is, as a hard perfume, or made into products for skin care and cosmetics.
Or the pomade can be alcohol extracted to create an absolute.
It is rare to find anyone making this type of absolute these days, as it is very time consuming. Yet there are still some rare individual artisans producing these traditional absolutes (in very small amounts).
We do our best to source absolutes of this old, traditional method. They are generally more costly because of the time and complexity involved in producing them. Yet they are of the highest quality known to us. We are proud and happy to offer these rare absolutes to all of our customers.
Blending with Natural Absolutes
Depending on what you are making, you can use oil or alcohol as a carrier for blending.
Alcohol Carrier
Alcohol is best for colognes, perfumes, and sprays. Almost all absolutes will dissolve in alcohol, although some will take time to dissolve thoroughly.
The type of alcohol that I prefer to use for this purpose is vodka. You can spend a lot on real perfumer’s alcohol, but really there is no noticeable difference in using high grade vodka as your carrier.
My favorite is a grape vodka called Ciroc. It has virtually no alcoholic aroma to interfere with the perfume, and is a wonderful carrier. I have also used Skyy vodka with great results. Skyy is filtered through quartz crystal, giving a very clean energy.
Botanical Oil Carrier
Filtered coconut oil is my favorite for blending with natural absolutes. It is thin in consistency and highly absorbable. It even works in most sprayers in case you want to use it as a perfume spray base.
Other potential carrier oils are grape seed, jojoba, and sweet almond. All of these will create a slightly oilier consistency than the filtered coconut.
Absolute Dilution
Absolutes are typically so highly concentrated, that their true aroma is not evident until they are diluted. That is, the aroma is compressed, and needs to be expanded through dilution before its true aromatic nuances are evident.
A good starting place for dilution is a 50% / 50% blend (or 50% dilution) of absolute to carrier. Another option is a 35% / 65% dilution, which is still quite potent and can be used to create perfume blends and add aromas to body care products.
If you are purchasing absolutes in 1.5 ml bottles, you can empty the bottle of absolute into a 5 ml bottle, and add carrier to fill the bottle. This makes about a 35% dilution of absolute. This is one of my favorite dilutions to work with as a perfume ingredient.
If you are looking to make a single note perfume from one absolute, you can experiment with dilution rates to reach the best effect. Adding 25 drops of 35% dilution to a 5 ml bottle of carrier, is often a very nice dilution for a perfume. It is at least a good starting point.
Test the blend on your wrist to see if it is close to the strength that you are seeking. If not, add a few more drops.
Natural absolutes are often most alluring at a very soft, subtle level. Even if you think it is not strong enough, try wearing it for a day before adding more absolute to experience its true effect.

Natural Absolutes and Healing
In this day and age, it can be challenging for most people to make the connection between perfumes and healing. Our noses are constantly bombarded with chemical based “fragrances” that are added to everything from dish detergent to toilet paper to clothing to plastic products.
Marketers have made us suspicious of anything that smells real. Their synthetic aromatic imitations of strawberries consistently test “better” than the aroma of real strawberries in blind tests.
Add to this, the media is constantly insinuating that if we smell like a real person, we will be unable to get a job, a promotion, or attract a mate! We are constantly encouraged to cover natural aromas with synthetic fragrances.
No wonder most people can not tell the difference between a synthetic aroma and a real one. But there is a difference–and it goes much more than skin deep.
Early History
Once upon a time in areas of ancient Egypt, America, China, and India, people began extracting the aroma of botanical substances. These extraction processes were refined and soon became available to healers, shamans, and perfumers as absolutes.
In those ancient cultures, there was no distinction between perfume and medicine–both were considered to be healing substances. People understood that natural botanical extracts could have a healing action on the mind, emotions, and spirit of a person.
Today, it has been proven by science that the hypothalamus–also known as the reptilian brain–processes the sense of smell. It is also the seat of instinctual behavior, and emotion. It becomes very clear how aromas can have profound effects on our minds, and even create responses in our physical bodies.
The metaphysical effects of absolutes are even more profound. Aromas have spiritual aspects. They are present especially when produced consciously, in a way that supports the spiritual energy (or morphogenic fields–a scientific term that is roughly parallel), to remain intact in the absolute.
Metaphysical aspects can support change and healing through frequency and vibration. They can offer a multi-dimensional aspect to any healing process.
Wearing a perfume that vibrationally supports a chosen intention, can enhance one’s ability to integrate change. Each time a person inhales the aroma, a vibrational boost of support enters the brain and supports the new programming that is being embodied.
If the inhalation frequency is amplified with a healing affirmation, repeated when inhaled, the healing process is boosted exponentially. We can use the beautiful aroma of natural perfumes to create new patterns, alternatives, and responses to our environment. They can help us change our lives for the better.

When applying essential oils to skin, dilution creates a better potential for success. If oils are not properly diluted, they can create an unintended effect.
Essential oils should be diluted to a strength that imitates the way they are available in nature. Between a 1% to 4% dilution is a very good starting point for oils that will be applied to the skin.
1% dilution
For children, elderly, pregnant, very sensitive, inside nose, mouth, or ears
•8 drops essential oil in 1 oz. carrier
•4 drops essential oil in 1/2 oz. carrier (or 1 Tablespoon carrier)
•3 drops essential oil in 2 drams carrier
2% dilution
For full body massage, spinal compresses, and most applications
•15 drops essential oil in 1 oz. carrier
•8 drops essential oil in 1/2 oz. carrier (1 Tablespoon)
•5 drops essential oil in 2 drams carrier
4% dilution
For local inflammation, pain reduction, burns, wounds, sprains, funguses, infections, organ compresses, whenever stronger effects are desired
•30 drops essential oil in 1 oz. carrier
•15 drops essential oil in 1/2 oz. carrier (or 1 Tablespoon carrier)
•10 drops essential oil in 2 drams carrier
Stronger dilutions
Stronger dilutions are sometimes useful for certain applications. Wounds, burns, skin funguses, insect bites, and topical infections will often call for an oil from 50% to 100% essential oil (pure undiluted oil is referred to as “neat”).
- Equal amounts of essential oil and carrier make a 50% dilution
Nature’s Dilution Ratio
Keeping in mind the extreme concentration of essential oils, it is usually more effective to use highly diluted formulas, as they mimic the levels of aromatic substance as they occur in nature.
Every drop of essential oil produced contains the aromatic equivalent of 50 to 70 cups of herbal tea. One pound of lavender essential oil takes 1,000 pounds or more of lavender blossoms to produce. These are clues to use them sparingly and dilute well, honoring the true value of these natural gifts from the plant world.

Essential Oil Potency
Taking essential oils internally can be a powerful form of herbal therapy. It is important to remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated in form. One drop of essential oil can represent the herbal potency of 50 to 75 cups of herbal tea. This makes it very important to dilute essential oils properly for internal use!
Essential Oil Quality
Many essential oils available on the market are produced for profit rather than for the good of those who are using them. They often contain synthetic chemicals, solvents, and other trace adulterants. Sometimes they are not made from the species that is listed. And often they are mass produced in a way that compromises quality. It is highly important to know that you are using the highest quality essential oils if you choose to use them internally.
Please research essential oils thoroughly before taking them internally, or obtain the advise of a Health Care Professional. It is advisable to become familiar with your source as well.
Dilution Rates for Essential Oils in Capsules
Essential oils can be taken internally for short duration, by capsule. Use a full capsule of 4% dilution in cold-pressed olive or other vegetable oil.
Alternatively, 1 to 3 drops of pure undiluted essential oil can be placed in a capsule.
Note: Many oils will dissolve the gelatin capsule quickly! Some may be stored for 24 hours under refrigeration; others must be taken immediately before they dissolve.
Use this method for short time periods only. It is best for treatment of severe bacterial, viral, or fungal infections; immune system boost when exposed to diseases; short intense cleansing programs for detoxification, particularly for cleansing heavy metals and radiation; and indigestion as an occasional treatment.
Dilution Rates for Semi-Homeopathic Remedies
Semi-homeopathic dilutions contain a similar amount of essential oil to herbal tinctures. They have a stronger physical effect than true homeopathic dilution remedies, and a softer energetic or vibrational effect.
Blend 1 drop essential oil with 1 oz. (or 30 ml) distilled or purified water.
Shake at least 100 times to activate. Formula must be shaken with every dose, as oil and water will separate.
Dosage is 1 drop up to 1/2 teaspoonful 2-3 times daily.
Note: Several drops of stevia extract may be added to improve flavor if desired.
Dilution Rates for Homeopathic Remedies
Homepathic remedies contain a trace, or no actual plant material, and are more active on the mental, emotional, and energetic levels of our being. There are several ways to make them, involving different methods of transferring the energy pattern of an herb or mineral into the base medium, usually water.
Use 1 to 10 drops of a semi-homeopathic dilution from above, added to 1 oz. (or 30 ml) of water. Shake at least 100 times to activate. To make an even stronger homeopathic remedy, this can be diluted out again, using the remedy you just made and repeating the dilution rate.
Dosage is 10 drops 2-3 times daily.
Note: At this dilution level, chemical effects of the oils have been eliminated. Homeopathic dilutions may be used long term without concern of harmful effects. Even oils that normally should not be used internally can be used at these dilutions.

This high intensity blend for body pain is perfect for relieving muscular, nerve, joint, and connective tissue pain. Apply oil directly to skin right before massage. Or apply as a compress to painful muscles or joints, feet, or spine.
Wormwood essential oil 10 drops
Holy basil essential oil 10 drops
Oregano essential oil 5 drops
African bluegrass essential oil 20 drops
Lime essential oil 40 drops
Douglas Fir essential oil 30 drops
Clove bud essential oil 10 drops
Add the above essential oils into a 1 ounce bottle. Add your choice of carrier oil (filtered coconut is a good choice because it is thin of consistency and highly absorbable) to fill the bottle. Shake well.
Apply this oil to aching joints of muscles, or use as a massage oil to relieve body pain. It can be further diluted for use over the whole body.
It can also be added to the bath, add 1 to 2 teaspoons and soak in a warm to hot bath for 15 minutes to relieve pain.
How to Apply Compress
- To apply a compress, cover the target area with a dilution of essential oil. Take your time and let the oil soak into the skin. You may reapply it until it has coated the skin completely.
- Next, cover the cover the area with a hot, damp towel. Be aware of the temperature–it should be hot, but not hot enough to burn! Cover the damp towel with another dry towel.
- Allow the moist heat to drive the oils into the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. If you are compressing a large area, such as the spine, you may need to reheat the towel once if it gets too cool.
- When the compress feels complete, around 15 to 30 minutes, remove the towels and lightly dry off any residual oil or moisture.
Compresses can be applied to the kidneys, liver, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, thyroid, heart, spine, feet, injuries, sinus area, neck, throat, temples, etc.
They are helpful for relieving the symptoms of colds , flu, and respiratory infection; headaches, migraines, arthritis pain, back pain, myofascia pain, bone pain, and nerve pain; and for relieving stress and creating deep relaxation. They can be helpful for a great variety of conditions, according to the oils you are using.
If you are using a compress on the spine, you may want to begin by “opening” the feet with a light coating of oil. This helps to ground the nervous system and enhance the healing process. Be sure to cover the feet afterward so they do not get chilled.
A Longer Treatment
When the damp, hot towel is applied, cover it first with a hot water bottle, then cover with a dry towel and blanket. This is great for compresses for pain, colds or flu, and deep relaxation.
Hot or Cold?
Heat is the preferred choice for most forms of treatment. Cool or even cold water can be used with injuries that have a lot of swelling or inflammation, as heat will tend to increase the inflammation.
Fever, and a feeling of being overheated will also benefit more from a cool compress.
Safety
When applying on the head or near eyes, be careful not to get any oil in the eyes. It will sting! (Use a cotton ball dipped into milk to rub across closed eyelid, to remove oil if it does get in the eyes).
A great way to compress the eyes, is to drop several drops of essential oil into a bowl of warm water. Dip a washcloth into the bowl, then wring it out until it is just damp, no longer dripping. Place the cloth loosely over closed eyes and allow the oils to work without contacting eyes directly.
It is very common for the receiver to feel tingling, or a light burning sensation. This is an indication that the oils are working, and may move around from one location to another. If it becomes too uncomfortable for a very sensitive person, the sensation can be stopped by dusting corn starch over the skin to remove the oil. (This will stop the process of the oil compress).

Give yourself a gift of a home facial!
1) Wash your face with 2 T. oatmeal mixed with just enough water to make it wet. Rub oatmeal into face and scrub lightly. Allow it to dry and brush off residue with your fingers.
2) Blend together: 2 T. goat cheese, soft unsalted butter, or farmer cheese; 10 drops seabuckthorn seed oil; 10 drops rose otto (pure rose oil). Spread this blend around face and neck, using gentle upward and outward strokes. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes then gently brush off any residue.
3) Boil 2 cups of pure water with 1 T. astragalus root. Simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and add 20 drops lemon, sweet orange, or bitter orange essential oils. Place in a spray bottle and spray over entire neck and face. This can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.
Repeat this facial treatment weekly. Over time, you will see your skin become vibrant and flexible, turning back the clock on the aging process!
This is a variation on a treatment shared with me by a woman from India. If you have ever noticed, many women of India seem to retain beautiful skin throughout old age, and my mentor believes this is the key to maintaining that vibrant skin.
