Observations and Anecdotal Information
Ravintsara essential oil is distilled in Madagascar, from the Cinnamomum camphora tree. The same tree in China yields white camphor essential oil. This tree was introduced to Madagascar in the 18th century, and has adapted to the different environment, changing its chemotype to include around 50% cineole.
There is some confusion with this oil, since ravensare essential oil also comes from Madagascar. Many people seem to think that these oils are one and the same, and they even call the oil “ravensara” in many cases, adding to the confusion.
It is important to know that ravintsara is primarily a respiratory oil, great for treating colds and flu.
It is not a remarkable anti-viral, as the ravensare is, and therefore not a treatment for shingles or herpes outbreaks.
It is a treatment for insomnia, joint and muscle pain, and a useful deodorant. It is used as a treatment for acne. It is good to put on small cuts, scrapes, and wounds.
And most of all, it makes a very fine oil for inhalation to treat coughs, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
