Observations and Anecdotal Information
The sap (or pitch) of piñon pine is known in many indigenous cultures to have astounding healing properties.
The trees themselves use it to heal their own wounds. If a branch is broken or a piece of bark is torn from the tree the sap oozes out onto the wound, providing a protective and healing bandage for the tree.
These same healing properties apply to human flesh. The sap can be applied directly to a wound, sliver, burn, infection, or cut on the skin. It stimulates rapid regrowth and activates an efficient immune response to the area where it is applied.
Although messy, it can be used for this purpose directly from the pinon tree. I would recommend you use disposable gloves and clothing to harvest and work with this sap, as it is so sticky that it will not come off of anything it touches!
When collecting piñon sap from the trees, be sure to honor the tree’s purpose for healing its own wounds. Only take just enough sap so that the tree’s original wound is not exposed.
Pinon amber essential oil is distilled from the sap, making it much easier to work with. It is a superb healer for the skin, and can be applied neat to injuries, skin ailments and conditions.
It is wonderful when made into a salve, using bees wax and olive oil, for healing rashes and dry skin.
