Observations and Anecdotal Information

Copal CO2 extract comes from a brushy tree that grows in many locations throughout western Africa.  The wood is traded as “West African gum copal”.   It is used for many purposes, including drum making, bowls, and interior furniture.

The resin is traded as “Gum copal”, and is burned in ceremonies as incense.  It is also used to fumigate houses and clothing,  and to repel insects.

In Nigeria, drums are soaked in a dilution of the resin, which gives them a deeper tone.

The gum and its essential oil or CO2 extracts are used extensively by herbalists and in traditional African medicine.  It is used to treat headache and migraine, and taken internally as a “cure” for diarrhea.

It is a purgative, and will supposedly flush the diarrhea out by increasing (and  completing) its action.  It is also used as a topical treatment for sores and skin conditions, and can be applied directly to skin for this purpose.

It is considered a diuretic, and has a detoxifying effect on the urinary system.  It is also used as an aphrodisiac.  It has pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

I find it to have a powerfully protective  spiritual presence, as do many plants that are used in ceremonies.

Science has backed this up, with findings of anti-epileptic and anti-convulsant properties in the oil.  It may be helpful for reducing seizures or convulsions, consistent with the indigenous tradition of driving out “bad spirits” from a person.
