Observations and Anecdotal Information

Spearmint essential oil has a widespread medicinal history throughout ancient Greece, Rome, and central Europe.  It was mainly used to treat digestive disorders, and a wide range of other ailments.  It is high in vitamin C, and was used as a treatment for scurvy in ancient times.

It is an effective remedy for nausea, hiccups, flatulence and motion sickness. It can be taken internally, applied to the abdomen,  or inhaled for this purpose.

It has been found to help with the symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and to act as a diuretic for treating urinary complaints.  It tones and strengthens the stomach and small intestine.

It tends to increase bile production in the stomach and aid digestion. This is the true history behind the after dinner mint!

Another popular use for spearmint is for expectant mothers, as a mild remedy for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

It has also been used to correct an imbalance of testosterone in women, that manifests in an abnormal masculine hair growth (particularly facial hair).

It adds a lovely flavor to teas, beverages, candies and deserts.  One of the little known facts about spearmint is that mice, rats and other rodents intensely dislike the smell of it, and it can be an effective deterrent to infestation.
