Mustard seed botanical oil is truly nourishing to the hair and scalp. You can create a mustard oil wrap. Simply massage mustard seed oil and coconut into your scalp, then cover with a warm towel to help the oil penetrate into your skin and hair follicles; leave it on for 10–20 minutes. Because the oil and the massage can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, it may stimulate hair growth. Follow by washing your hair as usual.
The oil is high in selenium, which makes it highly anti-inflammatory. It has been used to treat gum disease, by applying it mixed with salt, onto diseased gums twice a day. This treatment is most common in India, where it has been used for oral hygiene for many generations.
Cautions
- Mustard seed oil has been banned in the USA for culinary or internal use, due to high levels of erucic acid content. However, some studies have shown that only oils produced with high levels of heat produce high levels of erucic acid. Truly cold pressed mustard oil has a wonderful flavor and is used by chefs from New York to California. However, there is a risk with this oil, and if you are going to use it internally, you must be certain of the quality of the oil. A very good article by Dr. Axe covering the benefits and risks of internal use of mustard seed oil is available here.
- People with allergies or very reactive skin should proceed cautiously with mustard seed oil until they know that it works for them.
