Mustard Seed Botanical Oil–Arthritis Relief

$7.40

The emollient and stimulating properties of mustard seed botanical oil make the perfect combination for massage and facial rejuvenation.  Anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties also make it a perfect carrier for arthritis oil blends, and other pain relief purposes.

It is also used for anti-viral and anti-bacterial treatments, massaging tired achey muscles, and creating circulation in stagnant skin.

Mustard seed botanical oil has a distinctive  pungent taste, a common characteristic of all plants in the mustard family, including cabbage, turnip, radish, horseradish and wasabi.   It has about 60 percent monounsaturated fatty acids (42 percent erucic acid and 12 percent oleic acid), about 21 percent polyunsaturated fats (6 percent omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid and 15 percent omega-6 linoleic acid) and about 12 percent saturated fats.

Mustard seed botanical oil is considered to be an oil that has low saturated fat compared to other cooking oils. Its fatty acid composition makes it a source for omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.

Mustard oil is also known in Ayurvedic medicine as a poultice for chest congestion and massage.

In India, it is used a s a welcoming tradition by being poured on both sides of the threshold when someone important comes home for the first time (like newlyweds or even a son or daughter who is returning home after a long absence).

Aromatherapists use mustard seed botanical oil for cleansing the face.  It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, which are effective when used both externally and internally. The oil has contains levels of vitamin E, which helps improve skin health. It can help protect the skin against free radical damage from ultraviolet light and pollution, and can even help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, when massaged into the skin, the vitamin E in the oil can help promote circulation and boost immunity.

Mustard seed botanical oil is truly nourishing to the hair and scalp.  You can create a mustard oil wrap. Simply massage mustard seed oil and coconut into your scalp, then cover with a warm towel to help the oil penetrate into your skin and hair follicles; leave it on for 10–20 minutes. Because the oil and the massage can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, it may stimulate hair growth.  Follow by washing your hair as usual.

The oil is high in selenium, which makes it highly anti-inflammatory.  It has been used to treat gum disease, by applying it mixed with salt, onto diseased gums twice a day.  This treatment is most common in India, where it has been used for oral hygiene for many generations.

Cautions

  • Mustard seed oil has been banned in the USA for culinary or internal use, due to high levels of erucic acid content.  However, some studies have shown that only oils produced with high levels of heat produce high levels of erucic acid.  Truly cold pressed mustard oil has a wonderful flavor and is used by chefs from New York to California.  However, there is a risk with this oil, and if you are going to use it internally, you must be certain of the quality of the oil.  A very good article by Dr. Axe covering the benefits and risks of internal use of mustard seed oil is available here.
  • People with allergies or very reactive skin should proceed cautiously with mustard seed oil until they know that it works for them.
