Balm of Gilead

Balm of Gilead botanical oil is an ancient oil made from cottonwood buds.  It has been  referred to in the Bible many times.  It has been used as a medicinal substance by numerous peoples of several continents.

It is made by infusing fresh wild cottonwood buds in organic virgin olive oil, in direct sunlight, for 6 months.  The resulting oil is one of the best emollient oils around.

It is good for all kinds of wounds, and makes a wonderful base for wound healing preparations, balms, and skin treatment oil blends.

It is also a wonderful oil for massage.  It is useful for treating burns, skin lesions, dermatitis, and rashes.

Balm of Gilead botanical oil was used as an anointing oil in biblical times.  Various recipes were referred to along with other ingredients added to it, including myrrh, frankincense, or rock rose essential oil.

 Observations and Anecdotal Information

Numerous indigenous American tribes believe the black cottonwood has a spirit force that is very powerful.   It is common knowledge that the tree moves even when the wind is not blowing.  I have personally experienced this several times while harvesting the buds.

The wood is not to be burned, but is considered sacred.  It is used for making drums, rattles, and ceremonial objects.

Native people of these tribes often listen to the trees for direction.  Like the Lakota holy man Black Elk, they listen for the voice of the cottonwood tree, which is in prayer with Great Spirit at all times.
