Observations and Anecdotal Information
Numerous indigenous American tribes believe the black cottonwood has a spirit force that is very powerful. It is common knowledge that the tree moves even when the wind is not blowing. I have personally experienced this several times while harvesting the buds.
The wood is not to be burned, but is considered sacred. It is used for making drums, rattles, and ceremonial objects.
Native people of these tribes often listen to the trees for direction. Like the Lakota holy man Black Elk, they listen for the voice of the cottonwood tree, which is in prayer with Great Spirit at all times.
- No contraindications are known. Balm of Gilead botanical oil is generally regarded as safe at normal dosages.
