Observations and Anecdotal Information
Tonka bean is one of the most amazing gifts from the South and Centro-American rain forests. It has been a foundational staple and fixative for high quality natural perfumes, for nearly a century.
It’s extract was often used medicinally and to flavor foods and drinks, in Mexico and throughout South America and the USA. It is no longer used for consumption in the USA, as it contains naturally occurring coumarin, which can accelerate liver conditions or lead to liver toxicity if over used. It is still used around the world as a flavoring for desserts, ice cream, meat dishes, tobacco products, and alcoholic drinks, and other foods, outside of the USA.
