Evening Primrose CO2 Extract

September 16, 2011 | Posted in: Herbs & Essential Oils

Source:  China

Distillation:  CO2 Total extraction from seeds

Botanical name:  Oenothera biennis

Note:  Technically not an essential oil, this oil contains fatty and triglyceride elements like a food oil.

Evening primrose oil is widely accepted as the standard treatment of cyclic mastalgia – breast pain that cycles with the menstrual period. Conventional physicians in both Europe and North America suggest it routinely, and it is even mentioned in the AMA’s official Drug Evaluations textbook.

Evening primrose helps to relieve irritation — hyper sensitive nerves, muscles and mucus membranes that want to overreact to everything often respond very well to a daily dose of this oil.

The plant is known to act in a soothing way on acting on the peripheries of sensory nerves, relieving local and reflex excitability.   It has proven useful in hyper-sensitivity of the stomach with indigestion, uterine irritability, hysteria, hysterical vomiting, tenesmus (the urge to evacuate the bowels or bladder when they are already empty), spasmodic cough, and other difficulties of nerve reflex origin.

Because it is CO2 extracted, the oil is not exposed to heat above room temperature, and contains many elements that are lost in the refinement of commercially produced oils.  It should be taken orally in daily dosages around 1 teaspoon for the above conditions.
