Botanical name:  Betula lenta

This oil is a new offering from New York.  Birch bark must be soaked for 12 hours before production.  Typically, it produces very low quantities of an oil that has a heavier molecular weight than water.  This makes it harder to separate, as the oil sinks to the bottom leaving the water/hydrosol on top, unlike most essential oils.

The quality of this oil is quite amazing.  It is noticeably more complex than the oils available on the open market.

Process:  Steam distillation of wild roots

Botanical name:  Nardostachys jatamansi

Note:  May be distilled from green or dried roots.  The aroma is very different between the oils produced by these two methods.

Spikenard is an ancient essential oil, used by ancient Egyptian, Ayurvedic, and biblical healers.  It has been used as an anointing oil in rituals and ceremonies, and as a medicinal oil.  It is well known to be King Tutankhamen’s perfume, said to be worth its weight in gold.

Spikenard is the aromatic world’s strongest sedative, and a helpful treatment for migraines, insomnia, and nervous tension.  It can help the body unwind from stress patterns simply by inhaling the aroma, or through massage or spinal compress treatments.

It regulates the heartbeat, and can ease cardiac pain, as it is a strong cardiotonic.  It has been used with success in treating scleroderma, and can heal inflammation and rashes of the skin.

It is one of the oils used in the Egyptian ascension process.  It clears and balances the crown and pineal chakras, and opens connection from the higher chakras into the heart and root chakras.

Process:  Mechanically separated using only filters; no solvents are used, unlike commercially produced fractionated coconut oil.

Botanical name:  Cocos nucifera

This clear and pure coconut oil is lighter than grapeseed oil, jojoba, and other vegetable oils.  It is so fine that it can be used in a sprayer–I am even experimenting with  using it as a carrier in diffusion blends.  I will update on the results after I have more experience.

This is a fixed oil, which will not go rancid, because the triglycerides have been filtered out.  It is liquid at room temperature, and does not need refrigeration, according to the source of this oil.  It subsequently has a very long shelf life.

Some of the other benefits to using this oil, according to our source, are:

• It remains liquid at low temperatures.
• It contains no double bonds so there are no sites for oxidation therefore it has an exceptional shelf life.
• It consists completely of saturated fatty acid side chains, so it is more like animal fat and absorbs  readily into the skin making it ideal for massage therapy.
• It washes out of massage table sheets easily with no staining.
• It is an ideal product for natural perfumers who don’t want to use alcohol as a carrier, because it is the lightest of all the carrier oils. It will pass through a pump sprayer.
• It leaves skin feeling smooth without that greasy feeling.
• It’s very cost effective, at this price it is one of least expensive carrier oils.
• It is completely soluble with essential oils and compatible with soaps.

It does not have the skin emollient properties of natural jojoba, but I have enjoyed it in the past as a carrier oil for other purposes.  Because jojoba is so high in cost and facing a current worldwide shortage, this oil may fill in and help stretch your supply.

Process:  Steam distillation of fresh roots

Botanical name:  Valeriana officianalis

Valerian is a heart oil.  It can stop heart spasms and palpitations by applying directly to the chest with broad, circular strokes.  It is an antispasmodic, and can ease heart pain very quickly.

Valerian is a relaxant, sedative, and mild tranquilizer.  It blends well with neroli or champaca for easing energetic heart reactions.  It can be effective for convulsions, spasms, and for relieving insomnia.

Valerian can be taken internally at very low dilutions for strengthening the heart and its energy system.  It can also be applied externally for lowering blood pressure.

Valerian can offer energetic support when we are choosing to become more open-hearted in our relationships.  It can help uplift consciousness into an unconditional love space, and help us open and connect the heart with any of the other chakras.

Process:  CO2 select extraction

Botanical name:  Rosmarinus officianalis, ct cineole

This rosemary is a CO2 extraction, which carries similar healing properties to steam distilled rosemary.  Because it is produced at room temperature, it carries an aroma that is almost identical to the actual plant.

This one is a superior extract for adding to foods, to raise the frequency and improve flavor.

Rosemary is known for its “fountain of youth” properties.  Many stories exist in European herbal history about the rejuvenating effects of this elixir of life.  It was drunk as a tea for recovery from disease and degenerative conditions.

Rosemary is one of the few essential oils that can help regrow hair, and is sometimes effective for male pattern baldness.  It is a wonderful addition to shampoos and hair preparations.  It can also be used in a spray to get the oil into the scalp before shampooing.

Botanical name:  Citrus reticulata

Note: also called tangerine in the USA.

Commercially produced red mandarin oil often contains a slight “fishy” note in the top note aroma, due to a natural constituent that is formed at high temperatures.  This oil is free of that topnote, and has a beautiful, very light floral quality to the aroma.

Mandarin is detoxifying; it purifies the blood and stimulates the kidneys to eliminate toxic accumulation.  It can help relieve edema, detoxify cellulite skin condition, and relieve water retention.

It can be used to assist in healing scars and skin conditions, especially those involving acne or over production of oil from sebaceous glands.

Mandarin is balancing and stabilizing to the emotional body and the energy field.  It is a great oil for diffusing to help stabilize children with ADD or hyperactivity.  It is a great oil for the solar plexus and heart chakras, and can help bring resolve and completion to issues connected with those energy centers.

Botanical name:  Artemisia pallens

Davana has been in use in India for thousands of years.  It is used as a temple offering to Lord Shiva, due to its beautiful aroma and medicinal properties.

Davana relieves anxiety, depression, and mental stress.  It is used for transforming the effects of mental illness.  It induces inner peace and positive energy, and can support recovery from trauma and shock.

Combava’s properties include an ability to lower production from the sebaceous glands of the skin.  This makes a good treatment for acne, and oily skin and scalp conditions.

The beautiful aroma is bright and clear, and can change the atmosphere in a room in just moments of diffusion.  Combava stimulates veinous circulation, and is helpful for reducing varicose veins.  It is also a powerful lymphatic stimulant, as well as an anti fungal and anti-bacterial oil.  It makes a good compress for swollen lymph glands, and supports lymphatic drainage massage when used as a massage oil.

Catnip is very effective against mosquitos, ticks, and other flying insects.  It can be added to blends to create bug sprays and topical insect repellants.

Catnip is a well known stimulant for felines, who can become excited by the aroma. For humans, however, it is a sedative, relaxing the nervous system.
